Day-care centre Les Petits Drôles
Architectural Firm Du Coeur à l’Ouvrage won a competition in 2016, with their design for the new city day-care center on the French island Ste Marie de Ré. They created a fantastic project made of wood, inspired by the heritage of the island. Specifically, the salt barns and the oyster houses, which were all traditionally made of wood. The design is also reminiscent of beach huts, which are very much characteristic of the entire west coast of France.
Du Coeur à l’Ouvrage wanted the day-care center to have a playful and lively image and their plan led them to Rubio Monocoat. They decided to color and protect the vertical exterior wall cladding with Rubio Monocoat Hybrid Wood Protector. After a long process of selecting and testing colors, eight custom-made colors were decided on. Eight colors for the eight different school rooms. Each exterior wall cladding was oiled in another bright color. To make it into one whole and to lead the children from one room to the next, the exterior colors can also be found in the interior. Because Hybrid Wood Protector is suitable for virtually all wood types and can also be used for interior applications, some of the furniture and other details also got the same bright colors as the exterior walls.
