    Raises the grain too much

Used on a table top, great color on white oak (With 'Pure' Oil Plus 2c) but the water based Smoke pretreatment raised the grain and made it too rough for furniture (I waterpopped and sanded before hand but didn't help). Also there are conflicting instructions from Rubio Monocoat and Rubio Monocoat USA about whether you wash it off with water soon after, or 36hrs after. I let it sit over night, then washed it off, then let that dry before applying Oil Plus 2c. If I choose to go this route next time, I would use the Oil Plus 'Smoke' not the pretreatment, so I can get the color without raising the grain

    Rubio Monocoat USA

Rory, one option to combat the grain raise from the water-based product is to apply the oil using a red pad. We, Rubio Monocoat USA, do recommend allowing 36 hours and then neutralizing with water. Note: Oil Plus 2C "Smoke" is a light slightly off-white color and will not achieve a similar affect as the Smoke reactive stain pretreatment.

Didn’t seem very useful in terms of a wood pretreatment.

    Rubio Monocoat USA

Thank you for the honest review. Smoke is a tannin reactive pretreatment designed to give a specific reddish look of a traditional process but without the chemicals, and will only work when tannin is present in the wood you are applying to.

    Amazing color options

We chose Rubio Monocoat products because the Smoke effect combined with the White 5% homogenized the color variation between the red and white oak yet kept the floors looking warm and natural. We have since done several other orders with Rubio Monocoat products and will continue to experiment with all the amazing color options!
